With an emulator, you can test that strict firewall rule first. If it breaks the emulator, you hit refresh . If it breaks your live router, you lose connectivity for 10 minutes.

This is the biggest downside. Because it is an emulator , the buttons are usually not functional. You can type in the fields, but the "Apply" or "Save" buttons do not actually save settings to a real router.
